How to create your first dot
Setup happens on desktop and takes a few steps. After that you can reach your dot from any channel.
- Check your plan. Make sure you are on ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium in an eligible market. On Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare, ask your workspace admin to enable the dots beta.
- Open ChatGPT on desktop. Create your dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or in a desktop web browser. Initial setup is not available on mobile.
- Name your dot. Give your primary dot a name and make it your own.
- Connect your apps. Choose which apps your dot can access. Permissions are managed through your existing ChatGPT app controls.
- Let it introduce itself. Your dot introduces itself and starts learning your goals, preferences and standards.
- Set rules and approvals. Review the built-in rules, then add Custom Rules to allow, require approval for, or block specific actions.
- Reach it anywhere. After setup, message your dot from the ChatGPT mobile app, Slack or Microsoft Teams, or start a voice call.
Rules, approvals and oversight
- Built-in rules decide when a dot acts on its own and when it asks first.
- Custom Rules let you allow, require approval for, or block specific actions.
- Activity View shows progress, including background work, so you can redirect your dot.
- Auto-review checks actions that affect your accounts or share information.
- Always yours: sensitive tasks such as changing a password are never delegated.
Tips
- Connect only the apps your dot needs, then expand as you build trust.
- Give feedback on its work; dots learn what good looks like to you over time.
- Your laptop stays separate unless you choose to connect it.
- Review consequential work: dots can still make mistakes.

OpenAI does not use content from Business, Enterprise or Edu workspaces to train models by default. On personal plans you can control whether dots' conversations and work are used. OpenAI says it does not train directly on proactive research or your dot's notes to itself.
